Registering Vitamins and Nutraceuticals in Morocco

Illustration of a vitamin bottle, documents, audit checklist and shop marking the registration route

Morocco has no legal definition of "nutraceutical". A product is classified as a dietary supplement, a pharmaceutical or a functional food according to its composition and claims, and that classification decides whether ONSSA or DMP handles it, and how long the registration takes.

What counts as a nutraceutical in Morocco?

Morocco has no legal definition of the term. In practice it covers:

  • Vitamins and multivitamin-mineral complexes
  • Amino acids
  • Omega-3, collagen, coenzyme Q10
  • Products supporting immunity, joints, metabolism and energy
  • Natural extracts with proven effects, curcumin, resveratrol, ginseng

Depending on composition and claims, a product is classified as:

Classification French term
Dietary supplement Complément alimentaire
Pharmaceutical drug Médicament
Functional food product Aliment fonctionnel

That classification defines the registration pathway. Everything downstream, authority, evidence, timeline, follows from it.

Which authority handles the registration?

Body Remit
ONSSA, Office National de Sécurité Sanitaire des Produits Alimentaires Dietary supplements and nutraceuticals, including vitamins
DMP, Direction du Médicament et de la Pharmacie Pharmacologically active products, including high-dose vitamins
IMANOR, Institut Marocain de Normalisation Standards, including halal certification

The boundary sits at dose: a vitamin can be an ONSSA product at one strength and a DMP product at another.

How long does registration take?

Stage Duration
Additional queries and corrections 2 to 4 weeks
Total ~3 to 5 months, by classification

The document package itself is set out in registering dietary supplements in Morocco.

The three risks

Ambiguous classification. Products with antioxidant or hormone-like effects sit near the boundary, and near the boundary is where timelines stretch.

Customs. Customs can request extra documentation even where approvals are in place; approval does not guarantee frictionless clearance.

No local representative, no registration. This is absolute rather than difficult.

How to make entry easier

  • Run a preliminary assessment of ingredients and marketing claims, because claims drive classification as much as composition does
  • Adapt labels and promotional texts to local norms
  • Appoint a local distributor or authorised representative
  • Secure halal certification, especially for products in capsules, or containing omega or collagen

Frequently asked questions

Which authority handles the registration?

ONSSA oversees dietary supplements and nutraceuticals including vitamins. DMP, the Direction du Médicament et de la Pharmacie, regulates pharmacologically active products, including high-dose vitamins. Which one applies follows from the product's classification, not from the manufacturer's preference.

How long does registration take?

Roughly three to five months in total, depending on classification, with two to four weeks of that typically spent on additional queries and corrections from the regulator.

What are the main risks?

Ambiguous classification for products with antioxidant or hormone-like effects; customs requesting extra documentation even where approvals are in place; and the impossibility of registering at all without a local representative or importer.
