Israeli Standard 62368 TI for Electronics and IT

Circuit board with a blue shield and padlock icon representing device safety

Standard 62368 TI is based on IEC 62368-1 and replaced two older rules, IEC 60065 for audio-video equipment and IEC 60950-1 for IT equipment. It shifts the question from "does the device pass the checklist" to "is the device designed so the hazard cannot arise".

What is Israeli Standard 62368 TI?

62368 TI is based on the international norm IEC 62368-1. It replaced two older standards:

  • IEC 60065, audio and video equipment
  • IEC 60950-1, IT equipment

The new standard merges them into one system built around risk assessment and user protection. Israel made it mandatory for manufacturers and importers of electronic and IT devices.

What changed in approach?

Previously, producers demonstrated compliance by checking their product against a list of requirement points. Under 62368-1 they must prove the device is designed safely, that potential hazards have been eliminated by design rather than mitigated after the fact.

It is a different exercise from a pass/fail test programme, and the reason the transition took manufacturers longer than a routine standard revision.

Energy Source Classification

The standard is built on the Energy Source Classification (ESC) concept: it defines which energy levels are dangerous and how protection against them must work.

Its core principles:

  • Risk prevention at the design stage, not at the test stage
  • Evaluation of all energy types, electrical, thermal and mechanical
  • Multi-level protection for both users and service staff
  • Flexible solutions, different technical paths are allowed provided the required safety is achieved

That last point is what makes the standard workable across a fast-moving product category. It specifies the outcome required and leaves the mechanism open, so a novel construction is not automatically non-compliant for being novel.

Which products does it cover?

Category Examples
Computing and networking Servers, laptops, monitors, routers
Telecom Network adapters, telecom equipment
Audio-video Units, projectors, amplifiers
Power Chargers, power supplies

Certification under 62368 TI is required for both sale and import, without it, products cannot enter the market.

The export benefit

62368 TI is harmonised with the global norm, which simplifies export to Europe, the United States, Canada and Asia. A manufacturer certifying for Israel is generating evidence that travels.

Frequently asked questions

What is Energy Source Classification?

The concept the standard is built on. It defines which energy levels are dangerous, electrical, thermal and mechanical, and how users and service staff must be protected from them, at multiple levels. Different technical solutions are permitted as long as the required safety is achieved.

Which products does it cover in Israel?

Most electronic and IT devices: servers, laptops, monitors and routers; network adapters and telecom equipment; audio-video units, projectors and amplifiers; and chargers and power supplies. Certification is required for both sale and import.
