Chemical Product Certification: Where to Start

Chemical certification is highly country-specific, and four product properties decide the route: physical form, hazard class, presence of restricted substances, and end use. The Safety Data Sheet is where every assessment starts.
Why chemicals are regulated more tightly
Chemicals pose potential risk to human health, safety and the environment, so most countries enforce strict rules on classification, labelling, registration and product approval.
Certification provides:
- The legal right to sell or import the product
- Compliance with regional safety standards: REACH, CLP, GHS, ECAS, SFDA
- Transparent labelling for end users and regulators
- Protection against fines, customs delays, and forced withdrawal from the market

Two chemically similar products can take entirely different routes on the strength of end use alone: the same substance sold as an industrial reagent and as a consumer cleaner is two projects.
The process, in four stages
1. Product assessment. Review of the Safety Data Sheet (SDS); check for regulated substances against REACH, GHS and local bans; determine the required certifications for the destination country.
2. Documentation. SDS to ISO or local standards; label design compliant with GHS, CLP or the regional rules; product specification; manufacturer’s documents.
3. Laboratory testing, where required. Flammability, toxicity, pH and chemical analysis; biodegradability or eco-toxicity testing; packaging or storage safety tests. Accredited laboratories only, ISO/IEC 17025.
