Adapting a product to another country's electrical standards is where most certification projects meet their first real cost. Plug types, voltage and labelling all differ, a European product may not satisfy Middle East requirements, and an unreliable certification body can hand you a certificate that is worth nothing.
Why does a product need adapting between markets?
Every country has its own electrical safety standards and product requirements. Entering a new market often means modifying the product to suit local regulations. Plug types, voltage and other characteristics can differ substantially.
Incorrect adaptation causes difficulty at certification and delay at market entry. The expensive version of this problem is discovering it after tooling and packaging have been committed.
What to do. Study the standards in force in the target market in advance, and confirm the product complies before the design is frozen: the electrical safety standards, the corresponding labelling requirements, and the certificates and test protocols that will be needed.
Preparing the documentation
An incomplete or incorrect documentation package is one of the most common causes of delay, and the volume manufacturers have to supply is large: test results, technical documents, certificates of conformity.
What to do. Have the package assembled and checked for relevance by people who see these submissions regularly. The better the documents are prepared, the lower the probability of a hold at the certification stage.
Outlets and regional differences
Differences in outlet types and electrical safety standards complicate certification for products going to international markets. A product intended for the European market may not meet Middle East requirements.
This is not only about the plug. Voltage bands, earthing practice, and the standards a market recognises all differ, and each can force a change independently of the others.
What to do. Get testing organised and documentation prepared against all the regional requirements at once, rather than sequentially per market. Doing it market by market repeats work that could have been shared.
How do you choose a certification body?
Certification problems also arise from the body itself. Unscrupulous accreditation centres exist, and a certificate from one is invalid, with serious legal and financial consequences for the manufacturer.
The consequence of an invalid certificate falls on the company whose product it covers, and the issuing body carries none of it. Verify accreditation before engaging. It is the only point at which the risk can be avoided.
